Moshi town itself is relatively small but bustling with activity, especially with climbers and support teams coming and going. The surrounding area is characterized by the rich volcanic soils that make it ideal for agriculture, particularly coffee and bananas.

Key Sights & Activities in and around Moshi:

• Coffee Plantations: Numerous smallholder farms offer tours where you can learn about the entire coffee-making process, from picking cherries to roasting and grinding your own beans. The aroma alone is worth the trip!
• Materuni & Marangu Waterfalls: These are the most popular waterfalls. Materuni is taller and often combined with a coffee tour. Marangu offers a pleasant walk and a chance to swim. I always enjoy the refreshing spray after a warm hike.
• Chaga Culture Tours: Learn about the history and traditions of the Chaga people, who are indigenous to the slopes of Kilimanjaro. Visit traditional homes, learn about their farming techniques, and perhaps try some local banana beer.
• Lake Chala: A beautiful crater lake on the border with Kenya, offering stunning views and opportunities for kayaking or hiking. It's a bit of a drive but worth it for a day of tranquility.
• Moshi Market (Soko Kuu): A vibrant local market where you can find fresh produce, spices, fabrics, and get a real taste of daily life.
• Kilimanjaro National Park Gates: Even if not climbing, you can visit the Marangu or Machame gates for a feel of the park entrance and perhaps a short nature walk in the lower forest zone.
